Due to successful completion of obligations under their SBIR Phase One award, Zaxel Systems, Inc. received an SBIR Phase Two award in the amount of $750,000, effective August 24, 2000. The award is sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the development of a voxel-based immersive environment.

The Future Fund, a Southwestern Pennsylvania-based venture capital firm, became the first major source of private investment for Zaxel Systems, Inc. Before this Future Fund investment, over $3 million in grant-funded R&D was used to develop the world's most advanced virtual viewpoint technology.

Zaxel Co-founder receives Japan's C&C Award for lifetime scientific achievement
Takeo Kanade, co-founder and Chief Scientist of Zaxel Systems, Inc., received the 2000 C&C Award for lifetime contributions to the development of multimedia through the fundamental and broad advancement of robotics and computer vision. The NEC-sponsored award will provide Dr. Kanade with approximately 10 million Yen in recognition of his achievements.

University of Pittsburgh purchases Zaxel S-Video Compression System
Jeffrey Cohn, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and researcher for the Automated Face Analysis research project, purchased Zaxel Systems, Inc.'s S-Video Capture System on July 1, 2000. The Zaxel S-Video Capture System will be used to help the joint University of Pittsburgh/Carnegie Mellon University research project store and analyze several archival databases.
